A well known philantrophist and humanitarian, and the founder of Edhi Foundation, Bilquis Bano Edhi passed away in Karachi, Pakistan on 15 April 2022. She was 74.

Bilquis was a nurse by profession. She is known as the “mother of Pakistan”. She was awarded Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in the year 1986 and the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice in the year 2015. Her husband, Abdul Sattar Edhi, co-founder of Edhi Foundation, which runs the world’s largest volunteer ambulance network was awarded Lenin Peace Prize in the year 1988. Her charity runs many services in Pakistan including a hospital and emergency service in Karachi. Together with her husband their charity has saved over 16,000 unwanted babies.

My sincere condolences on the passing of Bilquis Edhi. Her life long dedication to humanitarian work touched the lives of people across the globe. People in India too remember her fondly. May her soul rest in peace.

Edhi Foundation was started by Abdul Sattar Edhi with the mission to provide aid to Pakistan’s poor and down-trodden has become Pakistan’s major relief organization under the leadership of the husband and wife – team of Abdul Sattar and Bilquis Edhi. Today, in addition to services provided in Pakistan, Edhi foundation is a major resource for assisting victims of disaster internationally. The Foundation provides, among many other services, shelter for the destitute, hospitals and medical care, drug rehabilitation services, and national and international relief efforts

Bilquis Edhi has spent her life for a noble cause.
