World Earth Day is celebrated every year on 22 April to honor the birth of the modern environmental movement that began in 1970.
The theme for EARTH DAY 2022 – APRIL 22 is “INVEST IN OUR PLANET “.
In 1962, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was published which led to increasing awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and the inextricable links between pollution and public health.
FOR THE FIRST TIME in the history of the world, every human being is now subjected to contact with dangerous chemicals, from the moment of conception until death.Rachel Carson in Silent Spring (1962)
The relevance of the above quote holds good till date. The first Earth day was celebrated in United States on 22 April 1970 and President Richard Nixon passed the National Environmental Policy Act , known as the World’s Environmental magna carta .The observation of first earth day is marked as “the big bang of U.S. environmental politics” , which highlights the significance of environmental concerns in development policies of the government.
Till 1990, the Earth day was focused on events within United States of America. In 1990, Denis Hayes took efforts to make the event recognized globally by mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage.
Paris Agreement of 2016
On November 4, 2016 the Paris Agreement entered into force.
Paris Agreement, officially known as 22nd Conference of Parties, or COP-22, is an international treatyby 195 countries of the world to limit the future emission of greenhouse gases GHGs such that the rise in global mean surface temperature will be no more than 1.5 °C(target) or 2.0 °C (upper limit) above the pre-industrial level.
What causes Global Warming and Why?
Based on the scientific observations, the mankind was polluting the atmostphere with greenhouse gases GHGs and the chemical composition of the atmostphere had concentrations of GHGs including CO2 . This results in increase of the amount of solar energy trapped by the planet’s atmosphere near the surface of the Earth. The main cause is the emission of CO2.Carbon dioxide is a by-product of the burning of fossil fuels (primarily coal, oil, and natural gas),which is thrown into the atmosphere as these are burned.
