International Dance Day is celebrated every year on the 29th April, to mark the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (29 April 1727  – 19 October 1810) . The aim of celebrating the International Dance Day is to revel in the universality of this art form, cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language – dance.

The goals of International Dance Day are

  • To promote dance in all its forms across the world.
  • To make people aware of the value of dance in all its forms.
  • To enable the dance community to promote their work on a broad scale, so that governments and opinion leaders are aware of the value and importance of dance in all its forms and support it.
  • To enjoy dance in all its forms for its own sake.
  • To share the joy of dance with others.

Jean-Georges Noverre, French dancer, is the creator of modern ballet. Ballet is a very specific
and prescribed sort of dancing. In a ballet, the dancer dances only in a theater, or at least on a stage. Ballet is only one form of dance. Ballet is the most academic form of theatrical dance, and the most
difficult to learn and perform.

In song and dance, man expresses himself as a member of a higher community. He has forgotten how to walk and speak and is on the way into flying into the air, dancing. . . . his very gestures express enchantment

—Friedrich Nietzsche
