Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned with immediate effect on 9 May 2022 as violence aggravates in Sri Lanka. The President, his younger brother ,Gotabaya Rajapaksa had accepted his resignation. It is reported that supporters of the Government have unleashed violence against peaceful protestors. Later on, anti-government protestors set Rajapaksa’s residence on fire in Kurunegala. Meanwhile the economic crisis in Sri Lanka has worsened.

A ruling party MP, Amarakeerthi Athukorala was killed along with four other protestors and over 150 people injured in the violence in the streets of Colombo.

Hours before resignation Rajapaksa appealed to the public to exercise restraint and remember that violence only begets violence
