His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the President of United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the ruler of Abu dhabi has died on 13 May 2022. He was the second President of UAE from 2004 to 2022, till his death. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , the Minister of Defence and the ruler of Dubai, will be the acting President till new President assumes the office.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, father of Khalifa bin Zayed, was the first President and the creator of UAE in 1971. UAE consists of seven emirates, Abu Dhabi (The capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain, each governed by an elected monarch. About 35% of the population of UAE are Indians.

Among the major reforms carried out by Sheikh Khalifa, elections to the Federal National Council (FNC), an assembly that advises the president, is most noted as it paves way for a more democratic system of governance. He is highly admired and respected by the people of UAE for his reforms and development initiatives. The UAE is the only country in the world that has a Ministry of Tolerance, a Ministry of Happiness, and a Ministry of Artificial Intelligence. In April 2019, the UAE Government launched Ministry of Possibilities which represents the next generation of government operations. The ministry intends to tackle impossible challenges effectively through new innovative models and working methods aiming to improve people’s quality of life.

The Ministry of Presidential Affairs also announced that the UAE will observe a forty-day state mourning with the flag flown at half-mast starting today, and suspend work at all ministries, departments, and federal, local and private entities for three day.

I am deeply saddened to know about the passing away of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed. He was a great statesman and visonary leader under whom India-UAE relations prospered. The heartfelt condolences of the people of India are with the people of UAE. May his soul rest in peace.
