History at Cannes

The idea of organizing a cultural event to rival the International Venice Film Festival sprouted up in 1939, when the Jean Zay, thr French Minister for Education and Fine Arts proposed to conduct the festival at Cannes.

The first Festival in 1939 was supposed to be held from 1 to 20 September 1939 in an auditorium at the Municipal Casino. On 1 September, German troops invaded Poland and the Second World War began. The festival was postponed for 10 days, but the situation only worsened. France and the UK War declared war against Germany on 3 September and general mobilisation was declared, making it impossible for the festival to go on. A single screening was organised – privately – of the American film Quasimodo by William Dieterle, for whose promotion a cardboard replica of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was built on the beach. Italy was ruled by Benito Mussolini, the founder of Fasicsm, from 1922 to 1943. The French, the British, and the American films withdrew from the Venice Film Festival in Italy and decided to have their own International Film Festival.

From 1946, in a France that was devastated by the war, Cannes began to be know to the world as the city for films. In these difficult times, a new generation of film making was born. The 1946 festival at Cannes is known as “The Second First International Film Festival”. From then on, every year the festival is celeberated with great vigour and enthusiam by the film lovers.

The event was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid 19 Pandemic.
